Filip Sitkowski

Here are some propositions of my topic:
From Bel Air to Mustang Shelby GT 500. The Car Culture in the American Society in the 1950s and 1960s.
The Four Wheel Magic. Symbols of Car Culture in the American Society in 1950s and 1960s.
The V8 nation. 1950s and 1960s – Golden Age of Car Culture in the United States.
In my paper I will prove that America is car cultured society where owning four wheels is something much more than in the other countries in the world.

Chapter I – “Get Your Kicks on Route 66.”

First part of paper will focus on the birth of automobile age in the United States and its main factors. The beginning of a car mass production in Henry Fords company, development of the interstate highways web (including the worlds most famous American mother of all roads – Route 66), with important parts of road infrastructure started. From the European side gas stations, motels, diners are just part of whole organism that are needed to keep it healthy and well functioning. For Americans they are the way of life. Gas stations with workshops were like markets, just placed somewhere outside cities, diners as well as drive-ins: restaurants, theaters, played role of a cultural centers where whole families used to go. Car became symbolic for America even before Willys invasion during IIWW; were a sign of status showing the wealth of its owner. The imagination of an Italian gangster is a striped suit, tommy-gun & an elegant black limousine.
This will be an introduction to an actual work made in chapters two and three. It is necessary to understand how (except of the size of the country) the car culture could develop so fast, what determined that growth and why Americans treat their metal boxes on wheels much different than any other nation in the world.

Chapter II – “A Cadillac a-rollin’ on the Open Road, Nothin’ Will Outrun My V8 Ford.”

IIWW was not only the diametrical change in the geographical & political sense. In American automobile industry revolution begin with totally new ideas about lifestyle. Young people after terrifying episode were surprised by Buick and other companies by releasing a new standard in motorization – full size cruisers. In comparison to those true kings of roads Europe cars like Beetle or Anglia.
In the United States launched rock and roll rebellion. Car became definitely symbol of new trends in people’s lives in pink decade where diners, drive-ins and V8 motors played main role in life of youth.
What was on the highways was not the only difference. In the 1950s oval changed from just a geometrical figure into an object of cult, especially in the southern states, thanks to the birth of NASCAR, motorsport that only Americans could understand.
As well as the NASCAR, quarter mile racing developed. The idea was very simple – racing with the opponent on the straight line from start lights to another. There were no need to build tracks, like in oval racing, traffic lights were almost in every city. The idea of distance is also simpler than a hammer construction. Crossroads with lights were very often placed exactly quarter mile from each other.
American boys had now opportunity to impress their girlfriends by winning the race, later taking them to a dinner in diner or newly born McDonald’s. It was the time when purchasing a house became equal with having a good car. Good means V8 Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet or any else. It has to be bigger and has more powerful engine than person’s best friend, father or, the worst, rival.
Car culture in the 1950s evolved vast also thanks to another phenomena – celebrities that became identified with vehicles. Elvis Presley was famous because of his music and a collection of Cadillacs. James Dean was big fan of motorization and that killed him and his Porsche.
In 1950s not only recognizable and rich people had fast and unique automobiles. General Motors and Ford started new decade with wings on the chassis but also with a technical beauties – V8 engines. That material with lots of old Fords and other cars showed another branch of freakiness known as custom cars; more specified hot rods. Perfect material like cheap and frame built ten or twenty years old cars, after some modifications cooperative with astonishing metal hearts, established capital in Orange County where it is also today. The mass number of hot rods invaded roads.
Lack of bonnet showing classical V8 engine, chopped roof (in extremely situations frond window had just few inches height), bright colors and huge number of horse power was a magnet to new automobile freaks. Later on even the biggest companies understood that new trend has started and muscle cars appeared.

Chapter III – “Get Your Motor Runnin’, Head Out On the Highway, Lookin’ for Adventure”

1960s started with one of the most known events in American history where role of the car was extremely important. In 1961 John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas. It would not be as easy if the president were in not Lincoln convertible.
Hippi decade was also important because of new fashion that took place in the cities. Main streets with their infrastructure lost the role of shopping centers because of malls. This was a true wound in the automobile organism thanks to the no cars areas. Vehicles were only allowed to park in the parking lots and their significance from an object of cult disappeared an evolved into “A to B transport item”.
As a response to pedestrian situation Pontiac started new trend in American motorization by creating unwinged and brutal GTO. This was the first of whole series of muscle cars which helped to accelerate the market and create another legend of America. For just about 2500-3500 dollars large number of people could own powerful car. Cars again took a role of a family member. Barbeques took place only when earlier muscle car owners could celebrate washing and polishing moments.
According to that situation, new trends in movie are born. Films like Bullit with Steve McQueen, original Gone in 60 seconds took over peoples minds. Films were supported by music where rockabilly or twist vibes lost with, for example, Steppenwolfs Born to Be Wild. New imagination of riding was an impulse to other filmmakers in creating such well known pictures like American Graffiti, Two-Lane Blacktop or Convoy not only in 1960s but even till now (like Tarantinos Grindhouse). In those movies car is equal hero with the human actors. If the Hollywood environment would not be so hermetic Shelbys, Chargers and GTOs could have their own stars with tire impress on Hollywood Boulevard.
1960s were also important because of war in Vietnam and newly born opponents of that conflict – Flower Powered Hippies which helped with another important moment in American car industry – wave of European cars flooding United States. Volkswagen T1 became symbol of hippi subculture with schizophrenic paintings on the body. Reason why it was so well going car was very simple, it was much cheaper than the American vans.
VW buses were not only car that conquered States. VW Beetle was a phenomenon. For example in 1968 total number of imported cars to United States was about half a million. Almost 400,000 were Beetles which were one of the cheapest ways of having a car.
Even though little VW was small and not attractive in first view, later on it became one of the best modification plant in case of drag racing.
The conclusion will consider arguments for and against the car cultured United States. As the nation where car is much more important in mental sense the statement could be the only one. I will try to prove it and support with rational and interesting arguments.
